As the CBD industry continues to grow rapidly due to high consumer interest and coinciding wellness trends among various demographics, the interest in other cannabinoids is also flourishing. With a variety of minor cannabinoids now in the spotlight, cannabis companies are relying on customer demand and emerging science in order to craft their cannabinoid therapy products. Among these popular minor cannabinoids, you've probably heard of CBG, CBN, and CBC. Here is our essential guide to CBC.
What Is CBC?
CBC, short for cannabichromene, is considered as one of the "big six" cannabinoids that are prevalent among medicinal research. While it is included in the "big six", CBC is probably one of the least well-known in this group. Like CBD and THC, CBC also stems from the precursor CBGA in cannabis plants. CBC is the natural result of the plant enzyme cascade and direct breakdown of CBGA which converts to CBCA. CBC is the result of heat or UV exposure to CBCA.
What Is the Role of CBC?
CBC is another non-intoxicating cannabinoid that doesn't create the same euphoria that THC does. Similar to CBD, CBC poorly binds with the CB1 receptor found predominately in the brain. However, it does bind with other receptors throughout the body like the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) and the vanilloid receptor 1 (TRPV1). These receptors play a role in pain perception. Preliminary studies show that when CBC activates these receptors, endocannabinoid levels, including anandamide, are increased and released.
Like other cannabinoids, scientists believe that CBC may have its own properties and therapeutic promise while also working synergistically with others in the entourage effect. However, science is limited when it comes to this potential synergistic role.
What Are the Benefits of CBC?
While CBC research is still in its infancy, preliminary studies support its promising therapeutic potential for the following conditions:
- Inflammation and pain: Animal studies show promising anti-inflammatory effects. It may act on different biological pathways for inflammation than NSAIDs and don't have the side effects. When combined with THC, the two may implify the anti-inflammatory response. In one study, CBC lowered both pain and inflammation caused by collagen-induced osteoarthritis.
- Cognitive function: An animal study found that CBC may have a positive impact on neural stem progenitor cells (NSPCs) which are cells required for healthy, optimal brain function.
- Depression: CBC is believed to work together with THC and CBD in order to deliver the maximum potential of anti-depressant properties.
- Acne: Researchers conducted a study on CBC to see its effects on acne. They found that it may act similarly to CBD, helping balance excess sebum production and sebaceous gland inflammation for combatting acne.
